A 39-year-old Cannon Air Force Base airman faces a possible misdemeanor charge after shooting himself in the leg Saturday.

Curry County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a gunshot wound at a home in the 3000 block of Cottonwood Drive around 8:45 p.m.

Initially, the injured man could not tell officers what happened. However once at the hospital, he reported he had been cleaning his gun when it discharged, according to Undersheriff Wesley Waller

Aside from being shot in his lower left leg, deputies also discovered an additional round had been fired into a wall of the mobile home. Waller said the man was unable to explain the other shot.

The man’s injury was discovered by his roommate who came home and found him covered in blood.

Waller said the man was described by deputies as being extremely intoxicated.

The man was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center, then to a Lubbock hospital for trauma wound treatment.

The injury was not considered life-threatening, Waller said.

Negligent use of a firearm is classified as a misdemeanor, punishable by a maximum of six months imprisonment.
