First person: Veteran lends voice to girls basketball

The second season is about to start for Bill Gaedke.

Better known as “Chief” around Clovis High School, the longtime instructor and retired Air Force chief master sergeant, is the public address announcer for athletics at CHS. He will be announcing girls basketball, a job he’s been doing since 1979. He’s done play-by-play for boys basketball and football since 1980 and the volleyball team since 1987.

Gaedke, 79, came to Clovis through Cannon Air Force Base in the early 1970s and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern New Mexico University. He and his wife Phyllis have two children, both CHS graduates.
