Raymond Beachum scored three touchdowns and Clovis took advantage of fumble-prone Highland for a 35-14 win Saturday in a first-round game of the Class 5A state playoffs in Albuquerque.
The 10th-seeded Wildcats (5-6) advance to play second-seeded and defending state champion La Cueva (9-1) in next week’s quarterfinals.
The Wildcats broke the game open with a 21-point third quarter, with Beachum running 22 yards for one score and catching a 47-yard pass for another. Quran Wiggins added a 6-yard TD run to put Clovis up 35-14 late in the third quarter.
Highland (7-4), which fumbled six times and lost five, tied the game at 14 just 30 seconds into the second half on David Brown’s 62-yard catch and run.
Beachum and Wiggins scored on short runs in the second quarter to stake Clovis to a 14-7 halftime lead.
