The time is fast-approaching to mail out those Christmas packages to kids, grandkids and more.

According to Chris Shepherd, who manages the United Parcel Service (UPS) office store in Clovis, it is best to mail packages from Dec. 13-15 if they want packages to arrive to their destinations in time for Christmas at an affordable price. Shepherd said those shipping to destinations like Alaska, should probably mail their packages sooner.

Shepherd said the starting time of the holiday rush can vary each year depending on how many people choose to ship their packages early but on average, it is best to ship things out by mid-December.

Duane Chase, owner of the Pack and Mail store on Prince Street in Clovis, also had some advice concerning holiday shipping. According to Chase, the Clovis Pack and Mail is one of about 280 such stores in the U.S. and ships packages through U.S. Postal Service, UPS and Fed Ex.

Chase said the customer picks which delivery service they will use and Pack and Mail sends their package to that service. Pack and Mail will also package the item or items being sent or sell the packaging material to the customer for their own use. Chase said the store does not charge customers to package their items but only charges for the packaging materials.

Chase also said people need to keep in mind that shipping costs are now based on weight and dimensions of the package and distance rather than just weight and distance.

“A week before Christmas, they (people) are going to have to start paying for expedited services (such as Next Day Air) for packages to arrive by Christmas,” said Chase.

Shepherd said premium services like UPS Next Day Air shipping and Second Day Air shipping are still guaranteed during the holidays. Next Day Air guarantees a package to arrive to its destination the day after it is sent if it is brought to UPS before 4:30 p.m. Second Day Air guarantees a package to arrive two days after it is sent.

Shepherd said a good money-saving tip is if a person is mailing a small package, they should be sure to put it in a box close to its own size.

He also said he would recommend to any customers that any gift cards being shipped with packages be put on the inside of the package rather than attached to the outside due to individuals having lost gift cards in previous years.
