Raymond Beachum scored on a 38-yard run with a little more than a minute left in the game, but Clovis missed the ensuing extra point and fell to Carlsbad 14-13 Friday in a showdown for the District 4-5A title.
Brandon Mendoza threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first quarter to stake Carlsbad (7-3, 2-0 district) to a 14-7 halftime lead.
Beachum added 1-yard TD run in the first quarter for Clovis (4-6, 1-1), which finishes with a losing regular-season record for the first time since 2000.
Clovis, which was ranked seventh in the latest Class 5A coaches’ poll — Carlsbad was 10th — hopes to earn a bid in the 12-team state playoffs. The New Mexico Activities Association will announce bids and seeds Saturday night.
