A tryout for the inaugural Curry County Cats was above expectations, the team’s general manager said.

Mike Muscato said 74 hopefuls came to Leon Williams Stadium Sunday morning to take their shot at a spot on the roster for the semipro team, which is gearing up to play February 2011 in the New Mexico Premiere League.

“The talent level exceeded our expectations,” Muscato said. “We had a lot of speed, a lot of talent. We’re maybe lacking a bit in size, but it was a very fast group.”

There was a first cut to 51 players, Muscato said, and the players will return Sunday for a second cut that will put the roster at 40.
