Wednesday morning briefing: Call for volunteers, cornbread tips and a reporter gets out of jail

Good morning and welcome to the Freedom New Mexico Wednesday briefing.

A little help needed

United way needs volunteers to help stuff bags of goodies for Health and Wellness day.

Meet 1 p.m. Thursday at UW’s offices in Clovis, 1200 Thornton St., to help stuff bags.

Health and Wellness Day is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Clovis Community College.

Kitchen tip of the week

Cornbread turns outs with a crisp on the sides and bottom and moist inside if you bake it in a cast iron skillet after pouring in a tablespoon or less of vegetable oil before adding the batter. It helps to preheat the skillet in the oven as well.

Today in history

On this day in 2005, New York Times reporter Judith Miller is released from a federal detention center in Alexandria, Va., after agreeing to testify in the investigation into the leaking of the identity of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame.

Miller had been behind bars since July 6, 2005, for refusing to reveal a confidential source and testify before a grand jury that was looking into the so-called Plame Affair.
