New Mexico counties will share more than $32 million in federal payment in lieu of taxes (PILT) money, according to a release from U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M.

The PILT program, administered by the Department of Interior, compensates counties for federal property that cannot by taxed by local governments, including military bases and national parks.

Area counties receiving PILT funds include Quay ($4,293), Roosevelt ($25,588) and De Baca ($100,171) counties.

Curry County traditionally does not receive PILT funds, said Maria Najera, a spokesperson for Bingaman’s office, as Cannon Air Force Base doesn’t meet the designations required for payment to local entities.
