PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University cornerback Rodney Mitchell has been selected an NCAA Division II preseason All-American by The Sporting News and Lindy’s Sports.

Mitchell, from Sarasota, Fla., will be a senior at ENMU this fall. He was one of two Lone Star Conference players chosen for Sporting News and Lindy’s Sports preseason honors, along with defensive lineman Aston Whiteside of Abilene Christian.

After spending two seasons at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, Mitchell transferred to ENMU last year and was a solid player for the Greyhounds, who went 3-8 overall (0-6 South). He led the LSC and tied for seventh in Division II with seven interceptions, including one for a touchdown, and also led the conference with 23 pass break-ups.

He was among the LSC leaders in tackles with 72, including 46 solo stops. Over the last four games of the season, Mitchell broke up 12 passes, including five against nationally-ranked Tarleton State.

The Greyhounds open their 2010 season on Aug. 28 against Southern Nazarene at Blackwater Draw. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. (MDT).
