Officials at Oasis State Park near Portales are gearing up for a Spring Trout Derby.

The derby is Saturday and is a first for the park.

It is sponsored by the Friends of Oasis State Park and gives anglers of all ages a chance to win prizes.

“We’re going to tag the trout,” said Park Ranger Valerie Russ. “The red tags are going to be worth $25, the blue tags will be $10 and the yellow is $5.

“Plus,” she said, “we’ll be giving away door prizes on the hour all through the derby that day. The incentive would be a great family bonding experience while fishing.”

Friends of Oasis Organization President Hershel Parker said there will be $300 worth of tagged fish at Oasis.

“We’ve been planning this for the past couple of months,” Parker said. “The registration fees are going toward the park’s needs. I just hope the weather is decent enough for us on Saturday.”

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and remains open during the derby.

There is a five-trout limit per person, and anglers 12 years-old or older must have a valid New Mexico fishing license.
