CANYON, Texas — Junior Kaitlyn Witte hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh, lifting host West Texas A&M past Eastern New Mexico University 8-7 on Friday in the Lady Buff Invitational softball tournament.
The Zias (5-13), who lost earlier in the day to Central Oklahoma 5-1, tied the score 7-7 with three runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer by senior second baseman Rebecca Quinones and a bases-loaded walk to Samantha Davis.
ENMU hit three homers in the game, but never led. The Lady Buffs (15-6) opened a 5-0 lead in the third inning, getting a two-run single to right in the first from Witte, a bases-loaded walk to Kasey Henderson and a run-scoring single by Kimberly LeComte in the second and an RBI single by Amber Farr in the third.
The Zias erupted for four runs in the fourth with back-to-back homers from Kimberly Crouse — a three-run shot — and Michelle Williams. WT added single runs in the fifth and sixth.
The Zias face Washburn at 11 a.m. (MST) today to wrap up their schedule in the tournament.
Central Oklahoma 5, ENMU 1 — The Bronchos (8-3) collected 15 hits — all but one of them singles — in handing the Zias a loss on Friday morning.
UCO scored an unearned run in the third, but ENMU tied it in the bottom half when third baseman Samantha Davis singled, took second on Jessica Childers’ sacrifice bunt and scored on an opposite-field single to left by Alex Mayo Otis.
The Bronchos regained the lead in the top of the fourth on left fielder Megan Bentley’s run-scoirng single, then added two in the fifth before Bentley singled hom another run in the sixth.
Soplomore Rachael Stevenson (3-1) went the distance, striking out nine and allowing six hits. Shortstop Kelsey Tiger went 3-for-4 for the Bronchos, while five others finished 2-for-4.
Crouse (2-5), who went five innings in the circle, and first baseman Kristen Cruickshank each had two hits for the Zias.
