OMAHA, Neb. — Facing top 10 competition in both matches, the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team managed to win one game Saturday in wrapping up play in a two-day event hosted by Nebraska-Omaha.
The Zias (0-4), who dropped a pair of matches on Friday, lost to third-ranked Emporia State 25-11, 25-14, 25-13 on Saturday before falling to No. 9 Truman State 18-25, 25-22, 11-25, 23-25.
ENMU led early in all three sets against Emporia, but the Hornets used an 8-0 surge to go in front 11-5 in the first game, then took control with runs of 9-1 in the second game and 8-1 in the third.
Arica Shepard had 13 kills for Emporia State, while Jessica King had seven kills for the Zias, whileMegan Carpenter added five kills and two block assists.
Against Truman State, ENMU got off to a quick start and led virtually the entire first game. A service error by Truman put the Zias up 3-2 and they eventually built a nine-point lead down the stretch.
ENMU led 10-6 in the second game, but Truman State took the lead for good at 17-15 with four consecutive points.
Truman dominated the third game, but the Zias led 22-18 late in the fourth set. Truman scored seven of the last eight points, including the final four, getting the deciding points on kills by Lauren Graybeal and Megan Sharpe.
Allison Barker had 12 kills and Graybeal 10 for Truman. Madison Rhodes led the Zias with nine kills, while Caitlin Murphy compiled 27 digs, King had eight kills and two solo blocks and Veronica Valdez-Kent contributed eight kills digs.
