Official reports Clovis schools attendance up

Expansion at Cannon Air Force Base is being pegged as the reason for a significant jump in the number of students at Clovis Municipal Schools.

Attendance is up 400 students from this time last year. That represents a 5 percent increase in the usual 8,000 students, Superintendent Rhonda Seidenwurm disclosed Wednesday.

Seidenwurm said the numbers taken from the third day of school serve mainly as a basis for comparison. She cautioned they are preliminary and not solid attendance numbers.

The school’s officials head count takes place Monday.

Seidenwurm said the schools are seeing growth across the district. And she said it’s clear most of the growth is attributable to the base.

Because growth was not limited to districts with base housing, Seidenwurm said it could be seen as an indication that Clovis’ economy is strong.

Total base man power is expected to be 4,900 at full capacity over the next four years, according to base officials.
