Rose Riley was surprised when burglars struck her shop Thursday night and took only flowers and teddy bears.
“They left a glass trail where they shopped,” Riley said Friday morning.
“They knew the difference between the quality of the bears… (And) they were after flowers and I don’t know, maybe they filled up some balloons too.”
Riley said the burglary was discovered when staff arrived to open Katie’s Flowerland Friday at 1520 Mitchell Street.
Police Capt. Patrick Whitney said the incident is under investigation.
Though the mess is cleaned up and the police report taken, Riley said she is still trying to get a tally on the amount of items stolen and the value.
She said thefts were primarily flower bouquets from the coolers — around six — and an undetermined number of teddy bears.
Riley said whoever is responsible selected the nicest of the bears she carries in her store.
Though she tells herself it could have been worse than the broken front door and stolen merchandise, Riley admitted it’s frustrating.
“My deductible is way more than what the merchandise was. With something like this, you always feel like it costs you to be in business, like you have to pay to get up and go to work,” said the Clovis businesswoman of nearly 16 years.
“Truth is that anybody that truly knows me, knows that I would have given them those flowers if they were truly desperate.”
Riley said she would be willing to offer a reward for information leading to an arrest and encouraged anyone that might have knowledge of the crime to contact police.
“When you have to break in for flowers and bears, it’s something really sad,” she said.
