State police today identified Michael S. Smith, 43, of Portales as the person killed in a two-vehicle accident Thursday night outside Portales.
According to a New Mexico State Police press release, Smith was traveling west on State Road 202 and failed to yield while trying to make a left turn on U.S. 70 to head to Portales.
Smith’s Chevrolet Malibu was struck on the driver’s side by a GMC Sierra truck driven by Rosa Dominguez of Clovis.
Smith, known as Scott to family and friends, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dominguez, 30, and her two daughters, Kayla, 3, and Kamila, , were transported to a Lubbock hospital where they were in stable condition this morning.
Kamila Dominguez was ejected from the pickup truck and was found still in her child seat, which was not secured to the pickup itself by a seatbelt, police said.
State police investigators at the site did not believe alcohol played a role in the crash.
