Police say 19 children received superficial wounds Wednesday from a pit bull running loose in a Muleshoe school playground.
It happened during a lunch recess for fourth-graders at DeShazo Elementary School.
Animal control officers later captured and quarantined the dog.
Police Lt. Benny Parker said teachers were attempting to get the children back inside the school when the dog began scratching and jumping on them.
None of the children’s wounds involved broken skin, Parker said, classifying the injuries as minor.
Parents of the injured children were notified and all the children were treated by the school nurse, he said.
If the dog is classified as a dangerous, Parker said the owner would be required to obtain insurance coverage.
