A grass fire about five miles northwest of Melrose consumed about 300 acres of pastureland Tuesday evening, according to fire officials.
The fire started about 7 p.m. between Curry roads 14 and 15 about a mile and a half west of New Mexico 268, according to Melrose Fire Chief Kenny Jacobs.
Firefighters had extinguished the fire by 9 p.m. and spent an hour watching for hot spots that might reignite it, Jacobs said.
Jacobs said the Fields Fire Department assisted Melrose.
He said no injuries were reported and no structures were damaged. Jacobs said the cause of the fire has not been determined.
