SAN ANTONIO — Second baseman Rebecca Quinones hit a run-scoring single to left with one out in the bottom of the eighth as Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team outlasted Saint Leo 4-3 Friday in the St. Mary’s Classic.
ENMU (2-2) also won earlier on Friday, edging Incarnate Word 9-7, also in eight innings. The Zias finish play in the event at 8 a.m. (MST) today against St. Edward’s.
Junior Kimberly Crouse (1-1) carried a 3-0 lead an a no-hitter into the seventh, but the Lions (0-3) broke it up with one out on a single by Stephanie Discepolo. After a walk, Brittany Yates hit an RBI single to center and Amber Martyn drove in a run with a single to left-center to make it 3-2.
Another single loaded the bases, and Tiffinee Harvey hit a sacrifice fly to short left field to tie it.
Playing the international tiebreaker rule, each team placed a runner at second to start the eighth. Crouse escaped with three infield popups, but ENMU’s Alex Mayo Otis advanced to third in the bottom half on Kristen Cruickshank’s sacrifice and then scored on Quinones’ hit.
ENMU did all its damage in the first against Kristen Kelley. Crouse hit a two-out RBI single up the middle, and catcher Michelle Anderson then whacked a two-run double to right-center for a 3-0 lead.
Crouse walked five and struck out three in her four-hitter. Ashley Urbanik (0-3) relieved Kelley in the second and took the loss despite allowing just two hits over 6 1/3 innings.
ENMU 9, Incarnate Word 7 — Mayo Otis and Kristen Cruickshank delivered run-scoring groundouts in the top of the eighth to give t he Zias a seesaw win over Incarnate Word (1-3).
Cruickshank (1-1) went the distance in th circle, allowing 11 hits and striking out seven. She also went 3-for-5 at the plate with six RBIs, including an RBI single in the first, a two-run double in the fourth and a two-run homer in the sixth.
ENMU finished with nine hits. Leadoff hitter Laura Thompson went 2-for-2 with three walks, two stolen bases and four runs scored.
