SAN ANTONIO —Freshman right-hander Paige Sandahl allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out seven in pitching third-ranked St. Edward’s to a 2-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday in the St. Mary’s Classic softball competition.

The Zias went 2-3 in what was their season-opening outing, losing to Rollins and host St. Mary’s on Thursday before posting extra-inning wins on Friday against Incarnate Word and Saint Leo.

The Hilltoppers (3-3) had nine hits against ENMU junior Kimberly Crouse (1-2), but stranded 10 baserunners.

St. Ed’s broke through in the bottom of the first as Lexi Stephens reached on an error, took second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on an infield hit and scored when catcher Courtney Lavender lined a single to right-center.

The other run came in the sixth. Kelsey Cogdell walked with one out and took second on a sacrifice, then pinch-runner Salena Acosta advanced to third on an infield hit and scored when Megan Bailey singled through the middle.

All nine hits for the Hilltoppers were singles, including three of the infield variety. Crouse walked two and struck out six.

ENMU’s hits came in the third, two-out singles by Laura Thmpson and Alex Mayo Otis. Mayo Otis was the only other baserunner, reaching on a two-out error in the first, as Sandahl retired the final 13 batters in order.
