JOPLIN, Mo. — Sophomore forward Gerardo Monarrez scored his second goal of the season with just over 13 minutes left in regulation and Eastern New Mexico University’s men held on for a 1-0 Southwest Soccer Conference win over Missouri Southern on Sunday.

Monarrez scored when a shot by ENMU’s Edgar Bear rebounded off Lions goalkeeper Jon Hansen.

Sophomore goalkeeper Peter Horak earned the shutout with six saves for ENMU (5-7-2, 3-2-1 SSC). Hanson had four saves for Southern (1-13-1, 1-5-1), which played the Hounds to a scoreless tie earlier this season in Portales.

It was Horak’s fourth shutout of the season. Missouri Southern did not manage a shot on goal after ENMU took the lead.

ENMU, which ended a three-match losing streak with the victory, continues a seven-game road stretch with non-conference matches against Texas A&M-International on Friday and St. Mary’s on Sunday.
