Sheriff’s department investigating possible arson

An arson investigator from the Curry County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a house fire Saturday in Melrose, officials said.

Firefighters were called to 516 Second St. about 8 p.m. when a neighbor noticed a fire, according to village Police Chief Jennifer Dreiling.

The residents were not home when the fire started, she said.

“The fire department was able to contain it really quick because it was called in so quickly, it didn’t have a lot of time to get going,” Dreiling said, explaining there was significant damage, but the home is repairable.

Officials called the fire suspicious but declined to provide details.
