The Curry County Commission has decided not to appoint a treasurer following the resignation of Rhonda Bookout, according to a press release.

Deputy County Treasurer Bernice Baker, who has been overseeing the treasurer’s office since Bookout’s resignation, will continue to manage the office until a new treasurer is elected and takes over in December, the release said.

Baker, a Republican, is running against small business owner and farmer/rancher Kathrynn A. Tate, Democrat, in the election.

Bookout resigned Aug. 22 after she pleaded no contest to a felony charge of tampering with public records. She had been on voluntary administrative leave since her indictment in February.

Bookout was charged with altering county ledgers.

Officials have said nearly $19,000 was discovered missing from 2007 county fair funds.

No one has been charged with taking the money.
