The U.S. Department of Agriculture declared 31 New Mexico counties disaster areas Thursday because of persisting drought conditions, including Curry, Quay and Roosevelt counties according to a USDA press release.

Eligible farmers have an eight-month deadline to apply for low-interest emergency loans from the Farm Service Agency to help cover their losses, according to the release.
