The Zia All-Stars were close to clinching the District 3 Little League 9-10 championship Wednesday night, but they’ll have to wait one more day.
Zia scored nine runs in the top of the first and added seven more in the third, but play was stopped twice before being called for the night by rain Wednesday at Beachum Field. Zia led Quay County 17-6 in the top of the fourth, and the game will be completed tonight.
If Quay mounts a major comeback and forces a second championship game, it would be played on Friday night in Tucumcari.
Zia took advantage of seven walks in the first inning, compiling only two hits in the frame. Zia’s seven-run third, meantime, featured two-run singles by Eli Cordova and Joseph Garcia.
Quay got a two-run single from George Molinas to pull to 9-3 in the bottom of the first, then added three runs on two hits and three walks in the third inning to make it 16-6.
The tournament winner advances to a state tournament game on July 19 at West Mesa Little League in Albuquerque, against the winner of the District 2 (Roswell) tournament.
Meantime, a winners bracket game between Zia and Roosevelt County in the three-team 13-14 tournament, which had been moved to Bell Park, was postponed Wednesday night and rescheduled for 7 p.m. today at Harris Field.
Tonight’s loser will play American at 7 p.m. Friday at Harris Field. The championship game is set for 4 p.m. Sunday, with the if-game to follow if necessary, at either Harris Field or Portales.
