Individuals have right to be treated fairly

This summer I am teaching school law in one of my teacher education classes. We talk about liberty and property and the freedoms that we have as citizens of this wonderful country. We talk about rights and responsibilities as well.

Those are good things to think about on this Independence Day weekend. It is good to think again about freedom and reassess how we are all so blessed to live in America. Sometimes, though that road has been very rough for some. Let me explain.

A student told me about his mother while we were standing in the parking lot one day discussing a class assignment. That inquiry led to a conversation on the essence of freedom and the opposing forces of oppression and prejudice.

He was in the Air Force and he told me about his childhood.
