A Bailey County commissioner gathered enough signatures on a petition to add an alcohol sales proposal to November’s general election ballot.
Bailey County Clerk Paula Benton said the county certified 747 signatures on Commissioner Juan Chavez’ petition earlier this month. She said Chavez needed 545 signatures to have the petition to allow packaged alcohol sales added to the ballot.
Bailey County does not allow public alcohol sales.
The proposal will be decided by a majority vote. The general election is Nov. 4.
Chavez said he believes liquor sales would increase tax revenues in the county.
Opponents say the revenue from alcohol sales will not make up for the negative social impact of bringing alcohol into the county.
