LUBBOCK — Two Air Force captains were taken to a local hospital for observation after they landed their T-1 Jayhawk in a field just short of the runway Wednesday night at Preston-Smith International Airport here last night, according to an Air Force press release.

The two are assigned as T-1 instructor pilots with the 86th Flying Training Squadron at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas. The T-1 is a medium-range, twin-engine jet trainer used in the advanced phase of specialized undergraduate pilot training for students selected to fly airlift or tanker aircraft.

A board of officers will investigate the accident.
