After 35 years in the newspaper circulation business, Mike Grigg still craves a challenge.

The draws are that it’s “different every day” and challenging, but working with customers is one of the most rewarding parts of the job, said Grigg, who took over as Freedom New Mexico’s circulation director in January.

“It always makes you feel good when you’ve got somebody who’s mad and you can get (them) what they want,” said Grigg, who started delivering newspapers part-time in college.

A Floydada native who has worked for the Lubbock Avalanche Journal, Denver Post, Dallas Morning News and Mobile Press Register, Grigg said he and his wife were living in Mobile, Ala., but wanted to move closer to home to be near their parents.

Besides, Grigg said he became bored in his last position because things were running smoothly.

Freedom New Mexico Publisher Ray Sullivan said Grigg brings experience to the circulation process that will enrich newspaper service for readers.

“Mike Grigg is a Panhandle native who brings decades of newspaper delivery experience to his role. The hallmark of his background is having his customers’ newspapers delivered where they want them, as much as possible, and on time,” Sullivan said.

“Since he started in January our circulation staff has corrected a lot of problem areas, but Mike and his people know good customer service is a daily commitment. They would welcome hearing from readers if they have delivery concerns or questions.”

The CNJ position, Grigg said, was a “big-time challenge” because it meant overseeing three papers, the Clovis News Journal, Portales News-Tribune and Quay County Sun, and taking the reins of a department that had been without a manager for a couple of months.

Grigg said he has already seen improvement in service to subscribers and morale in the department. The primary goal is to develop “a sense of urgency in satisfying the customer, from the carrier all the way up to the department,” he said.

Grigg said he has invested many late Saturday nights at the office, making sure things are set for Sunday deliveries.

A new circulation system is being implemented, which will make it easier to track customer accounts and deliveries and Grigg said he is striving for greater carrier accountability.
