The city’s municipal airport received a $4.1 million grant Monday from the Federal Aviation Administration to repave its main runway, according to a news release from Sen. Pete Domenici’s office.

Municipal Airport Director Steve Summers said the airport needs to repave the 35-year-old runway before a planned extension can begin.

City Manager Joe Thomas said the airport is actively pursuing funding to start the dirt work for the 1,800-foot extension to the runway.

The extension is part of several projects the airport is planning to accommodate the large traffic anticipated once Cannon Air Force Base is fully manned, according to Summers.
