What: The Great American Clean Up
When: 8 a.m. to noon. Saturday

Who can help: The event is open to the public. Groups can register in advance by calling 769-7870.
The contest: The Department of Parks and Recreation will pick out routes for the teams, which include the major throughways into the city.
The reward: The teams that collect the most garbage on main streets win a 12-inch gold, silver or bronze trophy in the shape of trash containers.
Free dumping: The Clovis Landfill will waive its fee for Curry County residents starting at noon today until 5 p.m. Monday. Contact the landfill for information on how to sort trash.
The challenge: The Curry County administration issued the Clovis-Curry County Chamber of Commerce a trash-picking challenge. If the county wins, chamber Director Ernie Kos will wear a prison jumpsuit and greet people at the courthouse lobby. If the chamber wins, County Manager Lance Pyle will greet tourists at the chamber office wearing a prison jumpsuit.
“We have got a plan and secret weapons,” Kos said. “Chamber chicks don’t lose.”
