PORTALES — New Mexico Highlands scored two runs in the first without benefit of a hit, built a 12-0 lead by the third inning and rolled to a 13-3 win over Eastern New Mexico on Tuesday night in a non-league baseball game at Greyhound Field.

Second baseman Clay Lucas drove in four runs and was one of five Highlands players with two hits. Cody Schweninger (2-0) went the distance on the mound for the Cowboys, pitching a seven-hitter.

With two out and a runner on in the top of the first, Kyle Gerhart reached on shortstop Sean Cruce’s error. Doug McIntyre (0-1) then hit Marcos Aldrete with a pitch, loading the bases, and two runs scored on third baseman Derrick Kennedy’s throwing error.

Highlands tacked on two runs in the second on Salazar’s squeeze bunt and Lucas’ RBI single, then erupted for eight runs on seven hits in the third.

ENMU scored twice in the third and once in the fourth, but managed only one baserunner over the final three innings. The game was called after seven on the 10-run rule.

Cruce and first baseman Chris Eaton each went 2-for-3 for the Hounds.
