PORTALES — Senior third baseman Derrick Kennedy’s one-out homer in the bottom of the ninth capped Eastern New Mexico University’s comeback from a 7-0 deficit and lifted the Greyhounds past Southwestern Oklahoma 9-8 for a sweep of their Lone Star Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday at Greyhound Field.

ENMU (19-18, 12-15 LSC) won the opener 13-5, and will try to take the series 3-1 in today’s 1 p.m. finale.

The Bulldogs (9-26, 7-23) jumped on top 5-0 in the first inning, keyed by Chris Morrison’s grand slam, and added single runs in the second and third.

The Greyhounds pulled close with six runs in the bottom of the inning, featuring a bases-loaded triple by Kennedy.

ENMU relievers Tyler Doughty and Keith Balderaz (2-2) each worked three innings in relief of starter Seth Clabaugh, combining to allow only three hits.

Southwestern added an unearned run in the fifth for an 8-6 lead. The Hounds got close on Chris Eaton’s one-out triple and an RBI single by Sean Cruce in the sixth, then chased starter Ty Pool and tied the score in the seventh — forcing extra innings in a scheduled seven-inning game — when Young led off with a triple and scored on Tyler Hayes’ single to center.

Eaton, Cruce and designated hitter Freddy Carmona each had two hits for the Hounds. Morrison led the Southwestern attack, going 3-for-5.

The Hounds made short work of Southwestern in the opener, scoring five runs on five hits in the first against the Bulldogs’ Adam Phillips (0-6).
