GOODWELL, Okla. — The Eastern New Mexico University softball team stepped outside Lone Star Conference South Division play Wednesday, and it was just what the doctor ordered.
The Zias snapped a nine-game losing streak — all within the division — with a 7-3, 5-1 sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle State.
Sophomore second baseman Rebecca Quinones went 2-for-4 in the opener and 2-for-3 in the nightcap, collecting four doubles. Meantime, sophomore Kristen Cruickshank (6-6) and senior Nicole Dickson (3-2) hurled complete-game victories.
Cruickshank went 5 1/3 no-hit innings in the first game before settling for a three-hitter. She walked one and struck out three.
The Zias (15-17) struck in the first when Alex Mayo Otis doubled with two out and scored on Cruickshank’s single. They made it 2-0 in the second when Quinones led off with a double and came around on two groundouts.
OPSU (4-27) scored an unearned run in the third without benefit of a hit, but the Zias broke it open when Quinones’ two-run double highlighted a four-run fourth.
In the second game, ENMU took a 2-0 lead on the first when Laura Thompson doubled, Jessica Pacheco singled and took second on the throw home, and Mayo Otis and catcher Michelle Anderson followed with sacrifice flies.
Panhandle State got its lone run in the bottom of the second. The Zias made it 3-1 in the third when Tawna Lei Tagaloa led off with a single and came around on Mayo Otis’ two-out double.
After Quinones hit a one-out double in the sixth, the Zias added two unearned runs with the help of two Lady Aggies errors.
Dickson scattered eight hits in her second complete game of the year. She walked two and struck out three.
