SAN ANTONIO — It wasn’t the kind of start the Eastern New Mexico University softball team expected.

After suffering through a 4-0 shutout loss to Southeastern Oklahoma in the season-opening St. Mary’s Classic, the Zias carried a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning against St. Edward’s before the Hilltoppers erupted against senior right-hander Nicole Dickson in the final three innings for an 8-4 victory.

The Zias play St. Mary’s and Midwestern State today, then close out the event on Sunday with a 9 a.m. contest (MST) against Texas A&M-International.

Southeastern Oklahoma 4, ENMU 0 — Designated player Bailey Mathes drove in three runs with a home run and a single and the Savage Storm cruised behind the one-hit pitching of Marjorie Johnson.

Johnson limited the Zias to their lowest hit total since they managed only one hit in a 5-1 loss to Western New Mexico on Feb. 21, 2004 — a span of 195 games.

ENMU got its only hit when center fielder Laura Thompson led off the game with a bunt single. Alex Mayo Otis then drew the first of her three walks with one out, and they worked a double steal before Johnson escaped the jam by striking out Michelle Anderson and Rebecca Quinones.

Johnson survived six walks, striking out 15, while Woodside gave up 10 hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
