Curry County Sheriff’s officials are investigating the battery of an inmate reported Monday afternoon at the county jail, Undersheriff Wesley Waller said.
Saul Prieto, 25, was listed in stable condition late Tuesday afternoon at a Lubbock hospital, Waller said. The undersheriff said he did not know the victim’s specific injuries.
The case is being investigated as aggravated battery, a felony, he said.
City police were called to the Curry County Adult Detention Center at 1:30 p.m. Monday for a report of an injured inmate. Prieto was taken to the emergency room at Plains Regional Medical Center. After initial treatment, Prieto was transported to a Lubbock hospital for observation, Waller said.
“They’re looking at a number of suspects that could have been involved in this,” Waller said, explaining investigators are conducting interviews with inmates at the jail to determine what happened and who was involved.
No charges have been filed, he said.
Warden Leslie Johnson said there have been no allegations of employee involvement in the incident. She said she could not comment further on the case, citing an ongoing investigation.
