TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Junior guard Lindsey Sams went 6-for-8 from the field and scored 19 points, leading four Northeastern State starters in double figures as the RiverHawks posted a 77-67 victory over Eastern New Mexico University Thursday night in a Lone Star Conference women’s crossover game.
Northeastern State (3-5) built a 20-point lead late in the second half and snapped a three-game losing streak, while the Zias (1-6) lost for the fourth time in a row. Guard Jazzal Quintana added 15 points and six assists for Northeastern, while forward Adrienne White had 13 points and guard Jessica White scored 12.
ENMU also put four starters in double figures, led by a season-high 12 points from freshman forward Cat Clay, who fouled out late. Freshman forward Til-Lois Fifer added 11 points, while sophomore forward Megan Kabrick posted her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and freshman guard Tori Northcutt scored 10 points.
Fifer’s layup and Northcutt’s 3-pointer staked the Zias to a 5-0 lead after more than two minutes, and Clay’s 3-pointer gave ENMU its final lead at 10-7.
Quintana tied it with a 3-pointer and Vanessa Gaston put the RiverHawks up for good with a layup midway through the half. The Zias stayed within striking range the rest of the period, closing to 30-25 on junior Erika Cook’s 3-pointer in the final minute.
Quintana’s basket gave Northeastern its first double-digit lead at 45-34 with 13:13 left, and the Zias never got closer until the end. The RiverHawks made it 74-54 on two free throws by White with 2:18 to go before ENMU finished the game on a 13-3 run.
The RiverHawks shot just under 50 percent from the field (27-of-55) and posted a 39-33 edge on the boards while finishing nearly 20 points above their season scoring average. They were credited with 22 assists to only 10 turnovers.
Meantime, ENMU went just 20-of-55 from the field. Northcutt and freshman Blythe McPherson each had four of the Zias’ 14 assists.
