A March of Dimes Jail and Bail event Wednesday at Leal’s Mexican Restaurant raised $15,000 in donations.

Business and community leaders were “jailed” for an hour. Bail was paid through donations. The average bail was about $450, according to Tina Tilton, community director for March of Dimes.

The funds go toward the fight against birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality through research, education and outreach programs.

“I think it’s hard for people to say no to babies and that’s what we want; healthy babies,” Tilton said.

Donations were collected via the Internet Thursday, she said.

“This area has always been very generous so we had high hopes. And we got what we hoped for,” Tilton said.
