A grandmother was arrested on drug trafficking charges Friday after police found heroin in her vehicle, according to the Curry County Sheriff’s Department.

Anna Barreno, 46, is charged with possession with intent to traffic heroin, tampering with evidence, child abuse and concealing identity, a sheriff’s department release said.

Barreno is being held at the Curry County Adult Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.

When sheriff’s deputies and Region V Drug Task Force agents stopped her on U.S. 70, they found 17 packages of black tar heroin in her vehicle, the release said.

Barreno was under surveillance after agents received a tip she was transporting drugs.

According to the release, she had her two young grandchildren with her in the vehicle.

Police later discovered two bundles of heroin and $500 cash at her resident in the Villa De Sol Apartments in Portales, the release said.
Jody Reyes, 31, who was at the apartment when the search was conducted, was arrested for possession of heroin. He is being held at the Roosevelt County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond, the release said.

Curry County Undersheriff Wesley Waller said the seized drugs have an approximate street value of $1,200.
