ROSWELL — Chantele Riddle had nine kills and was credited with 16 blocks Tuesday night as defending Class 4A state volleyball champion Roswell High defeated Clovis High 25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 25-18.
The Lady Coyotes (1-1) bounced back from a season-opening loss to Ruidoso against the Lady Wildcats, who were playing their opening match of the season.
Pam Blakeley added eight blocks while Breanna Ramirez collected nine digs for Roswell.
Junior outside hitter Lainey Flatow had eight kills while senior middle hitter Jasmine McDonald collected seven kills and nine blocks for the Lady Cats.
A late Clovis rally fell short in the first game. The Lady Cats pared a 24-17 deficit to two with five unanswered points, but after a timeout Roswell’s Tara Shields got a block on game point.
The second game was tied 5-5, but Roswell took control after the Lady Cats committed some unforced errors. The third game was also tight, tied at 11-11 and 22-22, but sophomore middle hitter Antiesha Brown got the Lady Cats over the top with three consecutive blocks to close it out.
Clovis opened a 6-2 lead in the fourth game, but the Lady Coyotes pulled even 7-7 and then took a 13-10 lead on three consecutive Lady Cats errors.
Down 22-16, CHS started to mount another charge, scoring the next two points. But Roswell forced a sideout, then Riddle put down a kill on match point.
