LAS VEGAS, N.M. — New Mexico Highlands rallied from a seven-point deficit to win a decisive third game Tuesday night and the Cowgirls went on to a 30-26, 20-30, 34-32, 30-15 over Eastern New Mexico University.
Junior outside hitter Ashley Murray had 20 kills and senior outside hitter Jasmine Morris added 19 for the Cowgirls (2-3), who avenged a loss in four games to the Zias (2-3) on Saturday in West Texas A&M’s Lady Buff Classic.
Junior middle blocker Megan Weitz compiled 13 kills for the Zias, while freshman outside hitter Veronica Valdez had eight kills and eight digs.
The Zias lost a back-and-forth first game, then dominated the Cowgirls in the second game, scoring the first four points and leading the entire game. Highlands never got closer than five points after a kill by Weitz made it 11-1.
ENMU broke away from a 1-1 tie in the third game and eventually built a 27-20 curhsion on a kill by senior outside hitter Jessie Macknicki. The Cowgirls then mounted a comeback, breaking a 32-32 tie on a kill by Murray and a bad set by the Zias.
ENMU led early in the fourth game, but Highlands erased a 5-4 deficit by going on a 20-3 run for a 16-point margin.
