Sporting a dog mask, 6-year-old Hailey Gosnell of Clovis crawled, rolled over and played dead on command.

Based on the applause from the crowd, she did it well enough to beat Tinkerbell, a black-haired, watermelon-size mutt, in a staged obedience contest.

The challenge was part of the Extreme Canine Stunt Dog Show during Monday’s opening day of the Curry County Fair. Performed three times daily, the half-hour show features rescued dogs in a display of agility, Frisbee catching and comedy. The show’s producer, Tom Clements, said he selects a child from the audience for each show based on who has the best dog bark.

“He asked for volunteers of who had the best dog bark and she was up there going ‘Woof! Woof!,’” said Lauri Gosnell, Hailey’s mother.
Clements and his wife, Mary, travel the country and use the show to raise awareness of homeless animals.

This is the first time the show has been held during the week-long fair at the Curry County Fairgrounds.

“I think it’s a wonderful cause,” Lauri Gosnell said. “We’re all the time finding strays and finding homes for them. We really like what they’re doing.”

“Flying Fiesta,” a world record Frisbee-catching dog, displayed her skills as Clements tossed Frisbees one after the other. In what he titled the “jawbreaker,” he warned children not to mimic his trick, and held a Frisbee in his mouth while the half-Australian shepherd, half-cattle dog ran and grabbed it.

“We have 13 dogs travel with us,” Clements said. “They’re all rescued and adopted from the pound.”
