A hayride turned into a tragedy Friday evening when an 8-year-old Fort Sumner girl was killed after falling beneath a trailer being pulled by a tractor, according to officials.

Anna Marie Unruh was riding on the trailer with a group of adults and children when she attempted to jump off, according to Deputy Medical Investigator Juan Chavez. On the jump, she caught her foot and fell beneath the trailer, he said.

She sustained extensive head and chest injuries as a result of being run over by the right-side tire of the trailer, according to Chavez and state police. She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 9 p.m. Chavez said.

The incident occurred on Four Winds Road near Fort Sumner, according to state police.

A student at Pecos Valley Christian School, Unruh is the daughter of Andy and Nancy Unruh of Fort Sumner.
