The District 3 Little League 13-14 division baseball title was hotly contested Tuesday night at Bell Park, finishing up at the midnight hour.

Quay County forced the “if necessary” game in the finals with a relatively routine 9-5 win over Clovis American. Then the teams settled in for a real donnybrook, with American scoring 17 runs in the top of the seventh to erase a one-run deficit and claim a 31-16 victory.

American will represent the district in state competition beginning on Saturday at Los Lunas.

American had control of the finale most of the way, scoring six times in the top of the first and building leads of 11-3 and 14-6.

Quay pulled even with eight runs in bottom of the fifth, then scored in the sixth for a shortlived 15-14 lead.
