A town hall meeting is being held at 6:30 p.m. CDT today at City Hall in Muleshoe to discuss an outbreak of burglaries, according to Muleshoe Police Chief Brian Frieda.
Since November there have been about 95 burglaries, compared with a traditional average of about 20 in a given six-month period, Frieda said.
The incidents have included burglaries to businesses, homes and vehicles, Frieda said. Several arrests have been made and there are outstanding warrants for some suspects, but the problem continues, he said, and has increased over time.
“It goes the full spectrum (in terms of who is responsible for the crimes). Some people know that we’re a relatively small community and our police department is stretched real thin and they take advantage,” he said.
Police are encouraging residents to come to the meeting and discuss the issue as well as several community policing programs that could help curb the problem.
