Doug Schwartz, a Mesa Elementary School teacher, is one of several New Mexico teachers honored by Wal-Mart as a teacher of the year, according to a Wal-Mart news release.
He receives a $1,000 grant for the school and $100 gift card to buy classroom supplies.
One teacher has been selected by each local Wal-Mart store and other Wal-Mart operations, with more than 4,000 teachers nationwide being honored in the program. Teachers were nominated by community members and selected by a committee of store or club associates.
Local winners have the opportunity to apply for state honors and a $10,000 school grant. The national winner will receive an additional $25,000 grant.
Clovis students take first at festival
Clovis High School students representing the Bilingual Program and Spanish language classes placed first in the 2007 Festival Romanico at Eastern New Mexico University, according to a Clovis Municipal Schools news release.
They competed against eight other area high schools.
The competition included Spanish poetry recitation, essay, original skits, video and talent.
