Defending 5A champion Clovis should easily win today’s District 4-5A meet, but Clovis coach Darrel Ray is hoping to add a few qualifiers who could possibly pick up some points at state.
“We’re looking (more) at improving some of our marks,” he said.
Among those he’s hoping can qualify for the state meet are Janae Eshleman in triple jump, Lainey Flatow in the 400, Tara DeWitt in the 200 and perhaps one or two in pole vault and javelin. Also, Michelle Schenk has a chance in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs.
“Janea is real close; her triple jump is not that far off qualifying,” Ray said.
Ray figures the Lady Cats are about 10-15 points behind La Cueva at this point. He said those teams appear likely to be the top two at next week’s state meet.
The Lady Cats scored 79 points at last year’s state meet, 11 more than runnerup Eldorado. Ray said they could score about that many points again, but he isn’t sure it would be enough to beat La Cueva, which has more entries qualified than anyone.
