PLAINVIEW, Texas — Clovis High grad Darren Davis broke Wayland Baptist’s school single-season strikeout record on Thursday, fanning seven hitters in pitching the Pioneers t o a 17-3 Sooner Athletic Conference win over Southern Nazarene.
Davis raised his total for the season to 100, five better than the previous mark of 95 set by Joel Kpapprodt in 1997. And it didn’t take him long to break the mark.
He struck out two in the bottom of the first to tie it, then faned Southern Nazarene right fielder Nathaniel McClellan for the first out of the second.
Davis improved his record to 4-6. He leads the team in earned run average (4.60) and has compiled his strikeout total in just 72 1/3 innings.
He got plenty of offensive support as the Pioneers belted 18 hits, including a season-best six home runs. Wayland struck early with six runs, then added five more in the fourth and five in the seventh.
Davis went the distance, scattering 11 hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
He has made 14 appearnaces this season for Wayland, tossing two shutouts and eight complete games in 13 starting assignments.
Davis, who graduated from CHS in 2003, is in his second year at Wayland Baptist after spending his first two college seasons at Trinidad College in Colorado.
The Pioneers lost the second game 11-4 and dropped to 20-24 for the season, including 6-11 in SAC play.
