ARTESIA — Freshmen Heather Trujillo and Shay Brady took individual singles championships and helped Clovis High’s girls to a second-place finish in the Artesia Bulldog Invitational tennis tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Clovis, which finished third or better in eight of nine divisions in the eight team tournament, scored 52 points to trail only Roswell Goddard, which had 68.
Clovis’ boys got a singles title championship from senior Dustin Hughes at No. 6 and scored 28 points to finish fourth. New Mexico Military took team honors with 60 points to 52 for runnerup Lovington.
The Lady Wildcats won at least two matches in every division. Trujillo defeated Goddard’s Haley Cassels 6-2, 6-3 in the finals at No. 1 singles, while Brady won at No. 5 singles with a 9-7 decision overr Goddard’s Skylar Crossley.
Two other Lady Cats reached the finals in singles — Kelsey Ashmore at No. 3 and Adriana Soto at No. 6.
Hughes took the No. 6 singles crown with an 8-5 decisiion over Cade Lawson of Lovington. Andy North finished second at No. 3 singles, losing to NMMI’s Jeff Guiltus 6-1, 6-0 in the title match, while the No. 3 doubles tam of Pavan Angadi and Andrew Tressell also won its first two matches before losing in the final round to the Lovington tandem of Lawson and Shane Elliott 6-4, 6-1.
