CANYON, Texas — Junior Nicole Dickson and freshman Kristen Cruickshank pitched complete games as Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team won twice on Friday in the Lady Buff Invitational.
Dickson pitched a four-hit shutout and Rebecca Quinones squeezed home the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth in a 6-0 victory over Missouri Southern. Then Cruickshank scattered seven hits and the Zias rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-3 win over Southwestern Oklahoma.
ENMU (11-10) continues play in the event today, taking on Oklahoma City University at 11 a.m. and either Washburn or Northeastern State at 3 p.m.
Valerie Villela hit a one-out triple in the sixth and came home on Quinones’ bunt single to break the scoreless deadlock against Southern (1-4).
The Zias added five more runs in the seventh as Villela and Quinones each hit two-run singles, and Michelle Anderson added an RBI single.
Trailing 3-2, Cruickshank singled home the tying run in the bottom of the fifth against Southwestern and third baseman Casandra McCammons followed with a two-run single.
Quinones scored on a wild pitch and Cruickshank added a run-scoring single in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead, but the Lady Bulldogs (9-9) went in front with a three-run fourth highlighed by pinch-hitter Meghan Browning’s two-run single.
Cruickshank finished with a seven-hitter, and she, Michelle Anderson and Alex Mayo-Otis all went 2-for-3 for the Zias.
