SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State opened a 6-0 lead through three innings and the Rambelles held on for a season-opening 8-5 victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Friday’s first day of the Angelo State Classic.

The Zias have three more games on tap today, facing UT-Permian Basin, Angelo State again and West Texas A&M. They close out the event Sunday with games against WT and Permian Basin.

The Zias got two runs back in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout by Rebecca Quinones and a run-scoring infield single by Alex Mayo-Otis. In the sixth, junior left fielder Christina Helland hit a two-out, three-run homer to center field to pull ENMU to 6-5.

The Rambelles answered in the bottom of the inning against Mayo-Otis as Kaycee Taylor led off with a single and shortstop Macy Baker followed with a two-run homer.

Mayo-Otis was pitching in relief of starter Nicole Dickson.

Baker also drove in a run with a single for the Rambelles and was one of four Angelo players with two hits.

ENMU finished with six hits against winner Kari Galm, who went the distance. She walked two and struck out three.

Mayo-Otis and Kelsey Kubick each had a pair of hits for the Zias.
